Why the certificate matters
The certificate proves to a browser that it is talking to the real server and lets the two encrypt everything they exchange. When it runs out, or does not cover the name in the address bar, browsers show a full-page warning instead of the site, and most visitors turn back.
Certificates from Let’s Encrypt are valid for 90 days and are normally renewed automatically. If fewer than about two weeks are left, the renewal has probably failed and is worth a look.
